FC Barcelona won the first Champions League game of the season. Despite the five goals, some of us surely have mixed feelings about the outcome. The opponent managed to score a goal after a very foolish Pique tackle in the box. The Barca defense didn’t play their best match, that’s for sure. However, there were some good performances too. Frenkie De Jong is worth to talk about. Let’s see how he did!
Negatives
As I said, the defense was not the best and that’s not only the center-backs or fullbacks responsibility. Most of the time, Ferencváros players easily run through our midfield and cause a real problem for the team. De Jong and Pjanic (and Coutinho too) should have to pay more attention when it comes to helping in the defense. Apart from this, there weren’t many mistakes in his game.
Positives
He seemed very comfortable in his position. With Pjanic, they tried to give more long balls for the attackers, which was really good to see considering, these days our midfielders tend to ignore the forward runs. We shouldn’t conclude from one match but it seems De Jong feels more comfortable to play with Pjanic than Busquets.
You could see that if he has the freedom, he could do amazing things with the ball, like the assist to Ansu. He played a very solid match and could control the midfield. Furthermore, it was good to see the Dest-Frenkie-Ansu triangle. They understand each other well and this will only improve with time. I’m looking forward to see more of this Frenkie De Jong.
