Netherlands coach and former Barça coach, louis van Gaal spoke a week before the start of the Qatar World Cup about several proper names in an interview with the Dutch network NOS
Van Gaal praised one of his players, Barça player Frankie de Jong. In addition, he assured that with the more than probable departure of Sergio Busquets At the end of the season, since his contract ends in 2023, a new panorama will open up for the Dutch midfielder: “I already said beforeh and that he was not going to take the position away from Busquets. But now that Busquets it will go, Frenkie will take his place and that is his best position”. In this sense, Van Gaal added that “every time he played there, he was the best on the field.”
The former Barça coach in two different stages (1997-00 and 2002-03) also highlighted the importance of the midfielder in the ‘Oranje’: “He’s very important. If the opponents want to block us, Frenkie is the man who can play from the back. He controls the ball, he can jump a line and he has the ability to leave a player alone in front of the goalkeeper.”
Van Gaal already directed his country’s team in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and led it to third place after falling in the semifinals against Argentina on penalties. He stated that his group of players is “fabulous” and explained that he already imagines his “campaign and the result is that we are champions”.
