The signing of Erling Braut Haaland is without a doubt a dream. But the chances of the club being able to afford him and the player himself being willing to join Barça look slim. Therefore, if Barça really want to bring in a proper number 9, they’ll probably have to look at some alternatives. One of these alternatives is Sergio Agüero, whose contract is set to expire in the summer.
Evidently, Agüero is a player with a different skillset to that of Haaland. Yet his repertoire perfectly suits Barça, as proven by Pep Guardiola. Good on the ball, intelligent and agile, the Manchester City legend is also an aggressive presser and, crucially, a lethal finisher. His experience allows him to find those ‘pockets’ inside the box, which allows him to always be in dangerous areas. In terms of his profile, few players would fit into our team better.
Age and Wage are the main problems
A big concern is the fact that he will soon turn 33, but that could actually prove to be a positive. In the 3-4-3, I personally see a fully-fit Ansu Fati as the ideal man to have up front, yet at 18 years of age, we would definitely have to rest him at times. Agüero looks like a brilliant man for the task, given he never fails to make an impact off the bench. His stay at the club would only be temporary, so that would really benefit someone like Barça B’s Peque, an extremely talented forward, who would probably be ready for the next step in his career by then.
Again, wages look like an obstacle, though. Being a well-established professional, Agüero certainly won’t be shy with his demands. If we can afford his salary, then we would get ourselves a real quality striker.
Overall, I feel like Sergio Agüero is the best alternative if Haaland isn’t signed. His experience and sheer class would definitely strengthen our squad.
