Swiftly moving to the opposite flank, there has been a lot of speculation around Real Betis right-back Emerson. Partly owned by Barça, the deal would be fairly easy to pull off. Let’s take a look at how Emerson Royal would fit into the team.
Emerson Royal has been under the spotlight for a while now, given Barça own a clause to bring the 22-year-old to the club for 5-10 million. A fast, dynamic fullback, Emerson is viewed as a great option for the future. For now, however, he’s got some flaws. His positioning and decision-making are questionable, while he also lacks that end product.
2 Right back options currently ahead of him
Obviously, Emerson will not be a starter. Dest is already far ahead of him, while he could even only be the 3rd option if Sergi Roberto is implemented as a right wingback. As a backup option, though, he looks decent. What we need to make sure is that, if we sign him, he should be given enough opportunities, unlike Junior Firpo, for example.
The deal itself should be easy work, but Emerson definitely has a variety of options. There are smaller clubs that could guarantee him a starting spot, so that may prove to be a key factor in his decision. It all depends on what the player himself prioritizes.
Personally, I don’t know whether we should bring Emerson Royal to Barça. It depends on where Koeman wants to use Sergi Roberto and whether he considers the Brazilian ready to step up. He isn’t the multi-task player that we need down the wings, but it’s obviously down to the coach. Given he’s in high demand, we could potentially get around 20 million for Emerson.
