Regarding the midfield, there haven’t been many rumours. We have been very strong in the centre of the park, with Busquets, Frenkie and Pedri being the starters as well as Riqui Puig and Ilaix on the bench. Yet there’s one player who Ronald Koeman fancies to sign, and it’s Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum.
Wijnaldum has been on Koeman’s wish list ever since he became Barça’s coach. Having worked with him with the Netherlands national team, he knows well how to use Gini properly. Under Klopp, the number 5 operates as a deep-lying midfielder, though he tends to get into the box very often. Koeman, however, has used him further up the field, making great use of Wijnaldum’s dynamism.
The arrival of Gini could block La Masia?
As an alternative, Wijnaldum would fit in well. Koeman has a stable 3 in midfield and barely rotates these positions, and we have seen on numerous occasions that the midfielders need some rest. Yet what is concerning is that, given we already have Ilaix and Riqui as the alternatives, one of them could leave.
Even with three months left in his contract, it seems like Gini Wijnaldum hasn’t decided whether he wants to stay at Liverpool or move away. Other than that, his wages could also prove to be an issue. In our current financial situation, we need to use our funds very wisely.
If you ask me, I don’t think Gini Wijnaldum should be signed. Our midfield is arguably the only position, alongside the goalkeeper’s spot, that doesn’t need to be reinforced. Riqui Puig and Ilaix Moriba deserve to be consistently playing, while the arrival of such an established player would definitely minimize their game time. It would be a big shame to lose one of these brilliant talents.
