After an extraordinary debut performance from Arnau Comas in the games against Gimnàstic and AE Prat, La Masia CB keeps on performing on the highest level at Barcelona B, managing to keep two clean sheets in 2 games with his partner Ramos Mingo.
Time at La Masia and development on Loan
After an extraordinary debut performance from Arnau Comas in the games against Gimnàstic and AE Prat, La Masia CB keeps on performing on the highest level at Barcelona B.
Unfortunately, the team lost in the semi-final against Chelsea during penalty-shootout. Their campaign ended without Comas making an appearance in either Quarter-finals or Semi-finals. After playing through all of Barcelona youth ranks, he earned a promotion to Barcelona B in the summer of 2019. Arnau was immediately sent on loan to UE Olot as he wouldn’t be able to get playing time ahead of players like Chumi, Cuenca, Araujo and Óscar Mingueza. Comas spent on loan one season making 17 appearances for the team and playing 1352 minutes in Segunda B, where he was able to develop his football at a professional level.
Playing Style
Arnau Comas is a tall centre-back who is fast, strong and brilliant with the ball. His composure on the ball is an immense advantage that gives him the ability to avoid any pressure from the opponents. He is confident and can take the ball up the pitch to open passing lanes to make that final ball to the midfielders or forwards. His ball distribution with accurate long balls to the wingers can help out to avoid high pressures and help the attackers to counter-attack with much more space available for them.
Arnau is an intelligent player. He understands when to tackle and how to cover open space stop opposition to breaking through the defence to get a goalscoring opportunity. Whenever there was a mistake coming from Barcelona B defence or midfield, he was there to stop a dangerous situation. His positioning and awareness are extraordinary, which developed during his time at Olot as he got much better compared to his time at Juvenile A. His playing style reminds me of Pique, they are very similar in most aspects.
Possibility to be called-up to the first team
After exceptional performances at the defence of Barcelona B in the first 2 games of the season. Arnau could be looking to get a call-up from Koeman to the first team. Especially after Koeman was spectating Barça B games from the stands. With Barcelona’s troublesome situation with their CBs, Comas could be to enter the squad list as soon as against Kyiv.
Araujo is still out with an injury for 2-3 weeks. Moreover, Umtiti isn’t fully fit , Mingueza is out with an injury. Both of them can be only expected to come back at the end of this month. This leaves Barcelona first team with two fit centre-backs and De Jong who could play in that position. Arnau could be able to travel with the squad. But first, he should be called to the first-team training. So Koeman and his staff could see him train in person.
In my opinion, Comas is still not ready for the top division. He needs more time with Barcelona B and Pimienta. However, it would be great to give him a chance to prove himself. It can be in Copa Del Rey or La Liga against weaker teams alongside Pique or Lenglet.
