Alvaro Cortes Moyano is a 21-year-old left-footed centre-back from Zaragoza who has spent the best part of six years working his way through Barcelona’s academy system. Born on March 17, 2005, Cortes joined the Barça youth setup from Real Zaragoza back in 2021 after academy scouts Jordi Roura and Aureli Altimira watched him dominate a match against Sabadell and decided he was too good to pass up.
His path was never a straight line to the top. A tough loan spell at CF Damm during the 2022-23 season under former Argentina international Pablo Rotchen hardened him physically, and a serious knee injury in October 2023 threatened to derail his progress entirely just as he was catching the eye of then-coach Rafa Marquez. He fought back from both setbacks, eventually taking over as captain of Barça Atlètic, the club’s reserve side.
Breaking Into Hansi Flick’s First Team
Cortes’ patience paid off in May 2026, when Hansi Flick handed him a full 90 minutes in a La Liga match away at Deportivo Alaves. Wearing the number 36 shirt, he lined up as the left-sided centre-back, partnering Pau Cubarsi before switching to play alongside Jules Kounde. As Barcelona’s first team enjoyed time off following the 2026 World Cup, Flick used preseason at Saint George’s Park to hand extended run-outs to a group of 17 academy players, Cortes among them. Alongside fellow La Masia product Xavi Espart, Cortes has been using the training camp to try to convince Flick that he belongs with the senior squad permanently rather than returning to Barça Atlètic.
The stakes are real. Both Cortes and Espart made their senior debuts last season but have limited first-team minutes to their name, and preseason form could decide whether they stay integrated into the matchday squad once the club’s World Cup contingent returns from holiday. For Cortes specifically, that means using every rondo, friendly, and training session to show he can be trusted alongside Kounde, Cubarsi, and Balde when it matters.
