Barca is solely focused on getting second place in La Liga.
They needed a win over Almeria to get one step closer to that goal. Did they achieve what they set out to do?
Let’s find out.
First half
The first half was a bit of a mixed bag.
The beginning had a clear and definitive way of play, while the end was sluggish and lacked any semblance of life.
For starters, there was an early goal from Fermin Lopez, a weak but effective header off a cross from the youngster Hector Fort. It wasn’t the sexiest goal or anything, but it got the job done, which is all that matters for Barca at this point of the season.
That brought Lopez to 9 goals on his debut season, truly a wonderful story for a player that wasn’t even thought of until the preseason.
As I alluded to earlier, the end of the first half was lacking any real action. Barca tried to slowly break down Almeria’s block, but they couldn’t do so. Add in the fact that they had plenty of defensive issues as well — and would’ve been down if Almeria could just finish like a normal club — and you can see why the first half was such a tale between two “halves”.
As halftime arrived, we sat at a 1-0 lead for Barca, with an extra 45 minutes left to reverse this disappointing performance.
Let’s see how Barca fared.
Second half
The second half was probably worse than the first.
Barca did clean up some things defensively, but their attack looked sluggish once again, and there weren’t many ideas being acted upon in the final third.
Yes, Barca did score another goal to make it 2-0, but the overall make up of the display was simply…well, boring.
The match ended 2-0, but it wasn’t a pleasant 2-0.
Barca got what they wanted, but the entire team looked lethargic, aside from a few select names.
Final word
I want to quickly move on from this match because it was awful to watch.
Let’s all move on and focus on Rayo Vallecano. If we actually can though, with all the rumors surrounding Xavi’s job security now spreading.
Drama FC…sigh.
Barca’s next match
Barca’s next match will be Sunday against Rayo Vallecano.
See you all then!
I’ve been a big time Barca fan since I was 14 years old. I love the club, the history, and the tradition that the club has built over its prestigious history. Forca Barca!
