The transfer market is closed, but the rumors keep coming. Despite the summer window over, clubs still continue to look to the future and work on January deals or are planning for next season already. For Barcelona, the main focus is on a deep midfielder as they look to life after Sergio Busquets. Martin Zubimendi is the top target, but there are others.
According to ‘Footmercato’, Barça are one of the teams that are looking at Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer. The Croatian, nicknamed the ‘the new Modric’, is one of the standout players for the French side since joining from Dinamo Zagreb. Various other clubs like Real Madrid and Atletico, for example, showed an interest in him. According to French reports, Barça are among them.
However, a deal would appear complicated — and expensive. Rennes signed him for €12m from Croatia and would not listen to offers below €60m. Moreover, Majer doesn’t have the same skill set as Busi. So going for him means relying on Frenkie and probably Nico as our main Defensive midfielders. It’s unlikely that the club will sign both the Croatian and, say, Zubimendi.
At 24, the Croatian midfielder is ready to take the next step in his career. Barça feel strengthening with a defensive midfielder is key with Busquets’ contract expiring. It is one of their objectives in the coming months, but it remains to be seen if Majer could be the player they turn to.
