Another day, and another presentation of a new FC Barcelona signing. This time it’s Andreas Christensen. The Dane Center Back arrives on a free transfer from Xavi. But what are Xavi’s plans for Christensen, and what should we expect from the defender in Barcelona?
First of all, it’s important to say that Christensen is a player that gets a lot of hate on Social Media. Especially since he decided to leave Chelsea on a free transfer. The Defender wanted to look for a new challenge, and we all know that Barcelona is a big challenge for a defender.
Historically, FC Barcelona is a team that plays a very attacking football. And that’s why the defense is always exposed. That’s why Xavi wants fast defenders that can play well with the ball. But is Christensen that?
What type of defender is Andreas Christensen?
Andreas Christensen is a quiet defender that most of the times you won’t really notice. And that’s great for a defender. He’s pretty fast, tall and he’s one of the best defenders in terms of playing with the ball. And Xavi knows that Barcelona’s attacks start from the backline.
In the last few months, there were some talks about mental issues that Christensen suffers from. They say that in big games, he stomach hurts suddenly. But no one talked about it when people thought he was heading to Bayern. Moreover, He played very well just last year in the UCL finals. And it doesn’t get any bigger than that.
Why are we looking for another Center Back?
Xavi’s plans for Christensen are not known yet. However, we do know that Xavi looks to bring another defender, preferly Kounde. Why is that? already have Pique, Araujo, Christensen and Eric Garcia. So why do we need another one?
First of all, we don’t know how fit Pique will be for the next season. Right now it doesn’t look good for him and he’s not training with the team.
Moreover, I can see Xavi playing with 3 at the back, or at least have this formation as a Plan B. And Christensen knows how to play in a 3 center backs defense.
Choosing 3 Center Backs between Araujo, Pique, Christensen, Eric and Koounde/Koulibaly is one of Xavi’s plans. Moreover, both Kounde and Araujo can play as Right Backs. That will leave more room for players like Christensen.
Bottom line
Just like the signing of Franck Kessie, Christensen is a low-risk High-reward signing for Xavi’s Barca. Even if the Dane will fail, Barcelona could always sell him and make a profit.
I sure hope to see more moments like this one:
Good Luck, Andreas!
