Bruno Genesio, Rennes coach, recognised there are doubts around the club about Samuel Umtiti. The coach knows the defender well from their time at Lyon, and having spoken about him before, he was a bit more reserved this time.
“He’s a player I like a lot. But we are also at a club with a way of working in which we don’t always agree with our choices. We need a consensus. There are doubts over his physical condition, so I understand, for the club. that’s something that could stop a deal,” he explained, honestly.
Genesio said this in a press conference, and also revealed that he had spoken to the player. “We had a chat where he calmed me down, but in the end the pitch will judge his condition. For me, he’s a world champion who has the experience that we’re looking for. We will speak to the club to see if we can reach a successful conclusion or not.
“We have people who watch a lot of games and analyse a lot of data, it’s normal to trust in them when it comes to transfers.”
