Summers at FC Barcelona are never calm. Newly arrived Hansi Flick is seeing how his vacation will have to wait. With a long list of potential signings and sales, the German coach has a lot of work ahead for the upcoming season. Before hitting the transfer market, the club must address internal matters. The first to return to training will be the loaned players. They will also be the first to know their future. The sporting management has already begun discussions with some of them. Specifically, Barcelona defender Julián Araújo. The Mexican full-back has had a great season with UD Las Palmas and now knows Barcelona’s decision about his future.
Preseason Opportunity with the First Team
After a notable performance in his first year in Europe, Araújo has given Flick reasons to consider him for the next season. In 28 games, he scored two goals under the guidance of García Pimienta. For the Catalan coach, Araújo was a key player until he got injured in March.
Barcelona recognizes his performance and has reached a decision.
Julián Araújo will participate in the preseason with the first team. Flick and Deco communicated this decision to him during a meeting at the training ground this Tuesday.
The club wants to give him a chance and test him during the summer tour. At 22 years old, Araújo also wants to impress the coaching staff.
However, this decision doesn’t guarantee his spot in the team. Depending on Flick’s assessment and any incoming offers, his situation could change.
Uncertainty in the Full-Back Positions
Barcelona hasn’t fully assured Araújo’s future for a particular reason: the uncertainty in the full-back positions.
Currently, Jules Koundé is the regular starter in that role. The Frenchman, despite preferring to play as a center-back, was a mainstay for Xavi. With Flick’s arrival, Koundé could return to central defense.
If Joao Cancelo’s loan is extended, the Portuguese could occupy the right-back position. Meanwhile, Alejandro Balde is expected to cover the left side once he returns from injury.
Another uncertainty is Sergi Roberto’s continuity. The captain was close to renewing his contract, but the change in coaching might alter these plans entirely.
The sporting management has many issues to resolve. To determine the future of these players, they must address each case individually.
What Lies Ahead for Araújo?
Julián Araújo’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain. While he has shown promise during his loan spell, his permanent spot in the team depends on various factors. As the summer progresses, both Araújo and the club will be keen to see how things unfold.
