If you’d ask any Barcelona fan back in January, there was no way that Xavi would stay as the club’s manager next season. The start of 2024 was as awful as one would imaging, conceding many goals, playing bad and losing matches all the time. After the catastrophic loss to Villarreal, Xavi said that as a Culé, he didn’t want to become the club’s problem. However, 2 months after this loss, the club is in an unbeaten run. Moreover, the PSG match is right around the corner. Therefore, it’s fair to say that in the next weeks we will see an an answer – Will Xavi stay or leave in the summer?
The Optimistic Scenario
In the optimistic scenario, Barcelona beat PSG in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Moreover, a win in El Clasico will give a boost to the season of Xavi and the players. And in an even more optimistic turn of events, Madrid losses some points and Barcelona manage to compete for the La Liga title, while getting to the UCL finals.
If these events will occur, I can see a way to convice Xavi, and therefore, he might stay after all. Although the coach said that “even if we win the UCL, I’m leaving”, the final decision will be related to how the team will finish the season.
The Pessimistic Scenario
A loss to PSG, and a loss in El Clasico will bring back the bad vibes around the club. In that case, Xavi will just want to let the final weeks of the season go by so he can leave.
In Barcelona, the fans, the journalists and the ‘Entorno’ just don’t let you stay if you fail. And a trophyless season is always a failure. Clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal and others could handle their coaches going through some rough patches. But not in Barcelona.
Bottom line
If we’re to believe the local media in Barcelona, the club wants to wait until Xavi announces if he wants to stay, before talking to other coaches. However, my guess is that the club already negotiates with few candidates, just in case. We just don’t know how the team will finish the season. This next month should decide how our summer will look like.
