FC Barcelona has announced the departure of its current football director, Mateu Alemany, in an official statement. Although his contract had one more year remaining, Alemany has decided to leave the club on June 30th. The official reason is “to pursue a new professional project”. Nevertheless, he will close all operations for the first team during the summer transfer window. Alemany’s contribution to the club allowed Barcelona to close seemingly impossible deals. Meanwhile providing the coach with competitive teams despite the club’s economic problems. The club has not yet revealed who will replace Alemany, but the current favorite is Antonio Cordón, who worked as the head of planning for Real Betis during the previous two seasons.
Alemany started working for Barcelona in March 2021 and made a significant impact on the team. During the summer transfer window of that year, he carried out a true revolution in the sports project by investing over €150 million in the team. He took the job during a complicated period and could only manage salary cuts and departures like those of Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, who left on the last day of the market. Despite this, Alemany and Ramon Planes tried their best to construct an acceptable team for Koeman to compete, but they could not succeed.
According to @gerardromero: “Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff were not happy with some of the behavior that occurred in the board of directors. There was a certain tension with some board members wanting more power than sports management.”
Barcelona fans are shocked by Alemany’s departure, given his record of achievements while working at the club. He will be remembered for his successful operations, and the fans hope that the new director of football will continue his legacy.
What is Alemany’s next step?
According to Catalunya Radio, Alemany’s next destination could be Aston Villa, where Unai Emery is the coach.
The departure of the director of football from the club’s executive structure is a significant loss. However, the club is grateful that Alemany has agreed to conclude all transfer operations before leaving. The announcement of Alemany’s departure came shortly after Barcelona’s win against Real Betis, with a score of 1-0. Fans and experts alike are now eagerly anticipating the next move by the club’s management.
