Jules Koundé (24 years old) has played 32 games this season with FC Barcelona, 16 times as a right back and another 16 as a central defender. His versatility pleases Xavi and became ‘a wild card’ for the Barça defense.
Signed to be central, the Frenchman usually occupies the axis of the defense in the games in which the team has casualties in the rear. On the other hand, when the culés have all their defenders available, his starting position is always the right lane. The only exception were the games against Real Madrid, where Ronald Araujo occupied the flank to face Vinicius. The poor performance of Hector Bellerin, who arrived on August 31 to shore up the right side and ended up in Sporting Lisbon in January, made Xavi Look for more reliable options like Koundé and sporadically Sergi Roberto.
Since his arrival this past summer of 2022 from Sevilla, the Parisian has been immovable for the Blaugrana coach. He only missed the games in which he was out with an injury. Occasionally, he missed some games with rotation in the starting eleven. For example, the duel of Copa del Rey in the field of Ceuta or the league match at the stadium of the Almeria.
