Robert Lewandowski and Poland lost vs France in the round of 16 of the Qatar World Cup. Despite the disgust from the elimination, the goalscorer of FC Barcelona did not rule out playing in the next World Cup in 2026.
“Physically I’m not scared,” assured the 34-year-old, although he warned that “there are many more things that can influence. Everything that surrounds the game, the desire, happiness… There are many things that, all together, can decide if you play more World Cups or not.”
The European Golden Boot admitted French superiority. Although he slipped that if they had taken advantage of the great opportunity that Poland had with 0-0, perhaps the story would have been different.
“In the first half we played very, very well. We created some chances. And perhaps if we scored the one chance we had it would have changed everything. But the goal in the last minute of the first half affected us”.
However, Lewandowski stressed that Poland can “proudly” leave the World Cup. Reaching the knockout stage 36 years later is a big achievement.
“We did the best we could. We struggled in the second half, we tried. But France have great quality as a team. We tried everything, but we lost…”.
His analysis was very marked by the level of the adversary. “We scored one goal, but we conceded three… if you play against the world champion it’s normal to have difficulties”.
Laughter when asked for his favorite
Lewandowski confirmed that from now on he will “have a few days off before returning to Barça”, with whom he promised to “give everything” for the remainder of the season.
Lastly, when asked about the team he would support now, Barça’s number 9 burst out laughing.
