Unless there’s a last minute surprise, the club will know the sanction that the Competition Committee impose on Robert Lewandowski and Gerard Piqué. Both players received a red card against Osasuna. Initially the decision was going to be last Friday. But, it did not have an impact on the cup match last weekend. Therefore, it has been postponed until tomorrow, Wednesday. A new meeting of the disciplinary body is scheduled to deal with the sanctions of the last matchday of the first and Second Division. And it is here where the three members of the Committee to issue a decision on both cases.
In the case of the Polish striker, the key lies in the interpretation of the gesture he did. Gil Manzano stated in the minutes as follows. “Other incidents: (Player: Robert Lewandowski ) Once expelled he was on his way to the exit of the field. The player twice made a gesture of disapproval of the referee’s decision. He put his finger to the nose, and then pointing his thumb towards the referee. When he was on his way out, he repeated the gesture again. He looked towards the assistant referee No. 1 and in front of the fourth official.”
Lewandowski already knows that he will miss the Catalan derby on December 31. However, Lewandowski might get two more games out for a contempt for the referee. As stated in article 124 and which reads as follows: “Address the referees, managers or sports authorities in terms or with attitudes of contempt or inconsideration whenever an action does not constitute a more serious offense, the player will be sanctioned with a suspension of two to three games or for a period of up to one month.” If so, the sanction would amount to three games.
Different versions
But there is also the option that they consider this reaction of the Pole as contrary to the ref. In that case it would remain in just one more match. Therefore a total of two games of sanction: “They will incur a suspension of up to four games or a fine of up to 602 euros. As whose conduct is contrary to good sporting order when it is classified as minor”.
Both cases are considered as light sanctions. Therefore, you will always have to comply in the same competition. Therefore the sanction will not affect the Copa del Rey that Barcelona will begin to play in the first days of January. This means that for Robert Lewandowski the Catalan derby at the end of the year 2022 is lost for sure. But right now, and unless the Committee only sanction him for expulsion, he is exposed to missing the duel against Atlético de Madrid at the Metropolitano. Thay game is scheduled for the first weekend of January (7-8). The next one scheduled for the return of the Spanish Super Cup where it would not affect him and he could play it without problems as it is a light sanction.
The sanction of Piqué will also be known
And the same goes for Pique and his sanction. On one side Gil Manzano’s report he stated: “In the 45th minute the player (3) Pique Bernabeu, Gerard was sent off for the following reason: Once the first half was over, already inside the changing room tunnel, for addressing me in the following terms: “Have you seen which corner you have whistled for us? You are the referee who has screwed us the most by far.”
But especially in the subsequent reaction once he received the red card. “Once the Club Delegate knew about the expulsion of the player, he continued to repeat the same expressions described in the Expulsions section. He had to be introduced to his dressing room by his club staff, while addressing me in swears.
The sanction here could be up to six games. However, Pique will never serve them. But Barcelona might have to face an economic fine as well.
