Ian Subiabre, one of the brightest young talents in South American football, has been linked with a possible future at FC Barcelona. The 18-year-old forward, developed at River Plate, has also attracted interest from Chelsea and other European giants.
With Barça constantly scouting emerging talents despite financial restrictions, Subiabre’s name has entered the conversation as a long-term prospect. The young Argentine striker has already scored once and provided an assist in 19 senior appearances for River, showcasing his promise at the top level.
A Versatile and Explosive Attacker
Subiabre’s profile is highly appealing for a club like Barça. Naturally right-footed, he can operate on either wing, as an attacking midfielder, or even as a false nine. At 1.71m, he combines pace, dribbling, and flair, reminiscent of the classic South American playmakers.
His record with River’s reserves is impressive: 7 goals and 8 assists in 30 matches, numbers that convinced Marcelo Gallardo to bring him into the first team setup.
Contract Talks and a Record Release Clause
River Plate, however, are determined not to lose their jewel easily. The club has already tied him down with a new deal until December 2028, reportedly including a massive €100 million release clause. The extension also allowed Subiabre to represent Argentina in the U20 World Cup in Chile, a showcase where European scouts will be watching closely.
This move mirrors River’s handling of Franco Mastantuono, recently sold to Real Madrid for a record-breaking €45 million plus bonuses. For Barcelona, after the expensive signing of Vitor Roque, such an investment on another South American wonderkid seems unlikely in the short term.

Barça’s Dilemma: Opportunity or Lost Cause?
While Subiabre could be a luxury reinforcement for Barça Atletic or a player to loan out for experience, the new contract makes any potential deal extremely complicated. Unless his situation changes in the future, the Catalan club may be forced to watch from the sidelines as Europe’s elite compete for his signature.
For now, Subiabre continues to shine at River, dreaming of a European adventure. Whether Barcelona can turn that dream into reality remains uncertain, but fans will be keeping a close eye on his progress.
