The midfielder has been sidelined with an injury and may not be back for some time.
According to Diario AS, the injury is “more serious than the official medical statement indicated,” and current thoughts suggest he will not feature at St James’ Park.
Gavi is currently dealing with discomfort in his right knee, and Barcelona is understandably being cautious since it’s the same knee that was operated on almost two years ago.
Barcelona is hoping that Gavi will be back for the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain on October 1st, which will hopefully be played at Camp Nou. This likely means he’ll also miss the league game against Getafe.
This situation marks a frustrating start to the new season for Gavi, especially after he impressed during the pre-season tour of Asia.
