La Masia never stops producing talent. The latest name to emerge is Baba Kourouma, a 16-year-old defender who has already trained under Hansi Flick with the Barcelona first team.
Kourouma, younger brother of Ilaix Moriba, is quickly making a name for himself, showing versatility, strength, and maturity beyond his age.
From Guinea to La Masia
Baba Kourouma was born on February 23, 2009. Like his brothers Ilaix and Lass, he grew up surrounded by football.
- Ilaix Moriba is now at Celta de Vigo, having previously played for Barça’s first team.
- Lass Kourouma had minutes with Girona.
Baba, however, plays a different role: he is usually a left-footed center-back, but his versatility allows him to feature as a pivot, full-back, or even an interior midfielder.
Arriving from Guinea in 2021, he joined Barcelona’s youth setup and settled at La Masia. Bureaucratic issues delayed his debut until 2022-23, but since then, he has grown rapidly through the ranks.
Style of Play and Strengths
Baba Kourouma’s game combines physicality with natural talent.
- Strong physique: Still developing but already stands out among his peers.
- Versatility: Comfortable as a central defender, pivot, or even left-sided full-back.
- Mentality: Coaches describe him as cheerful, eager to learn, and a natural team player.
This mix of personality and talent makes him a valuable prospect for Barcelona’s future.
First Steps With Barcelona’s Youth and Beyond
Last season, Kourouma played with Pol Planas’ Juvenil B, and this year he is stepping up with the Juvenil A. He made his UEFA Youth League debut in Newcastle, replacing Andrés Cuenca in the second half of Barça’s 3-2 victory.
He has also been called up by Juliano Belletti for Juvenil A matches and featured in the Copa Catalunya, where a mixed Barça youth squad faced Espanyol.
Flick’s Interest in Baba Kourouma
Ahead of the LaLiga clash with Real Oviedo, Hansi Flick surprised many by inviting Kourouma to first-team training.
The German coach has been impressed by reports on the youngster and wanted to see him up close. It may not be the last time Kourouma trains with the seniors, as Barcelona continues to track his development carefully.
At just 16, Baba Kourouma has already shown why he is considered one of the brightest defensive talents at La Masia. With his versatility, maturity, and hunger to grow, he represents the next wave of Barça talent ready to make the leap.
For Hansi Flick and Barcelona fans, Kourouma is a name to remember for the future.
