Barca has one last match to go.
An away trip to Sevilla, with Xavi’s last match being the biggest topic aside from the match itself.
So let’s see how Barca fared.
First half
The first half was a bit of a whirlwind, with both teams scoring goals to give the neutrals something a bit exciting to watch.
The first goal came from Barca early on after a period of Barcelona dominance on and off the ball. They were more calculated on the ball, with an added sense of controlled caution, so possession wouldn’t be lost so easily.
Off the ball, they were rapid, aggressive, and fiery, winning the ball back quickly off Sevilla whenever they gained possession in their own half.
This overall pressure led to an early goal by Robert Lewandowski, who pushed in a goal after a pretty cross from Joao Cancelo.
Ultimately though, the lead didn’t last too long.
Because 16 minutes or so later, Sevilla found an equalizer from En-Nesyri. But it’s a goal that probably shouldn’t have gone in, because Ter-Stegen should’ve saved it like any normal keeper would.
However, we know how unreliable Ter-Stegen is when it comes to defending his near post, so the result wasn’t exceptionally surprising.
As for the rest of the first half, there wasn’t much going on. Barca tried to find some more chances but it didn’t work out for them.
Onto the second half we went, with Barca looking for another goal and a win to close out Xavi’s tenure as manager.
Second half
14 minutes or so into the second half, Barca showed another sign of explosive life.
Not really team wise though, more so from a single individual that has ran onto the scene and has carved himself out a very respectable role at Barca this season, and probably into the future as well.
Based on these words, you probably know who I’m talking about.
Fermin Lopez got the ball on the left flank, cut inside, and fired a powerful low driven shot into the bottom left corner.
Talk about powerful from Lopez.
No one expected this output from him either coming into the season. Xavi however saw the talent, trusted him, and was rewarded with 11 goals for the entire season. That’s eye popping from a midfielder that was playing in Spain’s third division last season.
Just ridiculous from Lopez.
And Lopez realized the moment as well, running over to Xavi and giving him a hug after the goal. Was quite a touching moment for the young player.
Barca sustained some late pressure from Sevilla, who were pushing for a late equalizer. But it led to nothing, as Barca escaped with a 2-1 win to end their season and give Xavi a win going out.
Final word
All you can say is good for Xavi.
The whole situation with his job security has been poorly handled by Barca’s board and has led to the club being further discussed as a circus rather than a footballing institution.
But none of that matters right now at least, with Xavi getting a deserved win and going out with style. You can only hope he gets some much needed rest and relaxation from the rollercoaster that surrounds Barca every season, then if he’s ready, he can come back to managing.
For now though, Barca ends their season way off the tally of Real Madrid, more questions than answers, and a new coach who is set to take over a bit of a mess with no financial fair play room available.
Happy Summer?
Barca’s next match
Barca’s next scheduled match won’t be until July 30th, when they take on the defending Premier League Champions Manchester City in a friendly match.
See you all then hopefully!
I’ve been a big time Barca fan since I was 14 years old. I love the club, the history, and the tradition that the club has built over its prestigious history. Forca Barca!
