In a thrilling encounter, Barça Atlètic concludes Matchday 17 with mixed emotions following a 1-1 draw against Ponferradina. Despite dominating a significant portion of the match and breaking the deadlock in the 70th minute, Rafa Márquez’s team faced a resilient Ponferradina, demonstrating why they are among the top teams in the league by equalizing just four minutes later.
The first half unfolded with a scarcity of opportunities. Barça Atlètic controlled possession, but Iñigo Vélez’s side displayed a sturdy defensive line, limiting the attacking maneuvers of the Blaugrana. Pau Víctor had the clearest chance in the 9th minute, but Prieto managed to deflect the striker’s attempt. Marc Vidal had little to intervene as the visitors posed threats through lateral crosses, but Faye and Mbacke held their ground in defense.
Second-Half Shift and Offensive Surge
The second half began similarly, with Barça Atlètic maintaining possession. However, the Blaugrana intensified their attacking efforts, creating more danger in Ponferradina’s goal. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Alarcón and Faye tested Prieto, with the Senegalese player’s remarkable long-range free-kick hitting the crossbar. Moments later, a sharp turn and shot from Castelldefels native Faye forced Prieto into a miraculous save.
The persistence paid off in the 70th minute when Alarcón, a constant threat in the opponent’s area, capitalized on a cross from Unai. Despite Pau Víctor’s inability to control, Garrido’s awareness allowed Alarcón to find the net with a left-footed finish after a skillful cut inside.
However, Ponferradina, rejuvenated by the introduction of veteran Yuri, quickly altered the game’s dynamics. Just four minutes later, defensive disarray allowed Raúl Dacosta, a 41-year-old forward, to equalize. Dacosta turned inside the box, and the rebound fell to the Perico academy graduate, who clinically beat Marc Vidal. The visitors made the most of their first shot on target.
Defensive Stand and Late Drama
In the final minutes, the experience of Iñigo Vélez’s team prevailed over the youthfulness of Barça Atlètic. Marc Vidal made a crucial save, and Cubarsí, subbing in for Fort, helped control Ponferradina’s late assaults. Barça Atlètic, without excessive suffering and with a sense of deserving more, secured a point against one of the in-form teams in the league.
The draw leaves Barça Atlètic in sixth place with 28 points after 17 matches, falling behind the leaders after a three-game winless streak. Ponferradina, sitting in second with 33 points, trails Celta Fortuna by two points at the top of Group 1.
Barça Atlètic’s bittersweet draw reflects the challenges of facing a formidable opponent like Ponferradina. Despite the missed opportunity for victory, Rafa Márquez’s side showcased resilience and determination, proving they can contend with the best in the Primera Federación. The journey continues for the Blaugrana’s promising young talents as they strive for consistency and success in the competitive league.
