Memphis Depay is one step away from becoming a new Atlético de madrid player. The one that remains is the official announcement of the transfer from Barcelona to the Rojiblancos. Both sides are formalizing the agreement reached this Wednesday for the Dutchman to change the Camp Nou for the Wanda Metropolitano.
What changed from the summer?
Last summer it was the club that wanted Memphis Depay to leave the club. The club wanted to reduce his salary from the wage bill, and use that money to sign someone like Foyth. Moreover, it looked like Memphis would have a hard time as the team’s 6th forward. But eventually, Memphis decided to stay and Auba left. He thought that he could convince Xavi.
Halfway through the season, and Memphis hardly plays. He decided that he didn’t want to wait anymore, and he pushed to move to Madrid. Although the club didn’t like the idea of negotiating with Atletico, eventually the deal happened. It’s mainly because the club doesn’t want players that don’t want to be here.
Memphis Depay played 42 games for FC Barcelona. He scored 14 goals and had 2 assists to his name. He came in a very bad timing and he made an effort, and we should acknowledge that. However, ever since Koeman left and Xavi arrived, it honestly didn’t look the same.
Now, the Dutchman will move to his next destination, and we want to wish him good luck when it’s not against us.
Debut on saturday
The striker will sign for the remainder of the season and two more, and FC Barcelona will get 3-4 Million Euros. Memphis should arrive tonight to the capital of Spain. Tomorrow, an intense day awaits for the Dutchman.
First thing in the morning it is expected that he will pass the relevant medical examination. Afterwards, he will go to the Wanda Metropolitano, sign the contract and get to know his new home from the inside. Then the transfer should be made official by Atleti and Barça.
And if nothing goes wrong and everything goes according to plan, in the afternoon he will be under the orders of Diego Simeone for the first time. Atlético’s training will be in the afternoon. Therefore, it will be his first session with his new colleagues.
Memphis will have two training sessions before the first game of the team with him in their ranks. On Saturday, Atletico will play against Valladolid at home. That’s where his official debut with Atlético de Madrid could come. That is of course if Simeone deems it appropriate and all the papers are in order.
