Sergio Busquets left his future up in the air after the elimination against Morocco yesterday. He did not say that he’s retiring from international football. The Barça midfielder is yet to clarify what his future will be with regard to the national team or with regard to club football.
‘Busi’ stated a few months ago that he would decide after the World Cup. Therefore, the time to make the decisions has arrived. Or, at least, to announce them if that decision has already been made.
Busquets has several options that, for the moment, they have at least two clubs on the list: FC Barcelona and Inter Miami. Busquets’ contract with the Barcelona expires this season, on June 30. So from January 1 he is free to negotiate his future with whoever he wants. Barcelona does not want to wait so long and wants to know what to expect as soon as possible.
THE BARÇA OPTION
Barça is yet to give up on renewing him. The one pushing for his renewal the most is the coach, Xavi Hernández. He still considers Busi an indispensable player. He still hasn’t received an answer from Sergio and wants to open a new round of contacts with the aim of a renewal. However, the club knows is very unlikely.
In fact, both the board and the management deportiva are more in favor of putting an end to Busquets’ stage at Barça than of renewal. There is the economical factor, and Busquets earns a lot. Moreover, there is discomfort about how the captains’ situations have been managed in recent years, without an agreement when an extension of the captain’s contract was proposed to help with the salary bill; and by the technical secretariat, they consider Busquets leaving as the end of the cycle.
Only the insistence of Xavi, who as Luis Enrique considers Busi as fundamental, makes Barcelona look for a new batch of contacts for the renewal.
THE INTER MIAMI OPTION
If there is no renewal by Barça, the most likely destination for Sergio Busquets is Inter Miami. The American club is in conversations for a long time, both with the captain from Barcelona as with his friend and former teammate Leo Messi. The club’s chairman David Beckham wants to put them both together starting next season, which in MLS starts in February.
Advancing the departure of Sergio Busquets from Barcelona to go to Miami in the middle of the campaign (beginning of the campaign in the US), as former captains like Bakero or Asensi did in the past, is very improbable. But not impossible. The economic structure of Barça would see it favorably if there were a favorable agreement in the resolution of the contract, although at the moment Sergio Busquets and Xavi, who claims the opposite, are not considering it. Inter Miami knows that they will have to incorporate Sergio in the middle of their season.
KEY DAYS
The inter option for next July looks like the more probable right now. In any case, it is something that Sergio Busquets must decide now. Barcelona wants that before the return to training, On December 16, the footballer will give an answer.
The blow of the KO in the World Cup may push Sergio Busquets to realize that it’s the end of the the cycle for him. It already happened with Xavi after the 2014 World Cup, and with Iniesta after the 2018 World Cup. Moreover, there’s also another important factor: Luis Enrique’s decision about his future in the national team. World Cup elimination might mark his farewell.
