According to a report from Javi Miguel: Frenkie De Jong met with Xavi on Sunday in Las Vegas to discuss the player’s situation.
The report claims that Xavi made the situation clear from his and the club’s perspective. Frenkie is a well-liked player and would be welcomed to stay next season. But he has an extremely high wages. Therefore, he must make an effort to accept a salary reduction to help the club’s finances.
De Jong’s salary is one of the obstacles the club is currently facing in their effort to register the new signings. That is why there is already a deal in place to sell Frenkie to Manchester United. A sale would bring both extra profit and take Frenkie’s salary off the books. That would go a long way in helping Barça avoid sanctions due to Financial Fair Play.
But the player is clear that he doesn’t want to leave the club. Hopefully, now De Jong understands the situation. He would have to agree to a dramatic paycut of almost 50 percent in order to continue his Barça career.
It’s a long summer for Barça and Frenkie. And of course there are many interests involved. But hopefully, all parties can sit together and reach the best possible solution. Frenkie is a player that the club loves, and he loves the club too.
The Dutch is one of the last ‘Bartomeu’ contracts in the squad. Like we said before, the POV of the club is clear: Either renew and be part of the new wage structure, or leave.
But it’s fair to say that the tactica that the club used to force him to leave caused bad blood between the sides. Hopefully, after the good talk with Xavi, we can see a good solution.
