What was supposed to be a reset for Hansi Flick’s Barcelona has quickly turned into a nightmare. Dani Olmo’s injury, one of the cornerstones of the new Blaugrana project, has disrupted the German coach’s plans just before a crucial run of matches: the Catalan derby against Girona, the Champions League clash with Olympiacos, and the El Clásico against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The setback comes at a delicate time, as Barça were looking to regain rhythm and confidence after a shaky start to the season. Olmo, a homegrown talent and key link in Flick’s attacking setup, will be sidelined for several weeks due to a calf injury, leaving the coach with a serious challenge in reshaping his offensive system.
Flick Loses His Only Natural Playmaker
Olmo had started in four of the last five matches, completing the full 90 minutes in three, showing how vital he’d become under Flick. Now, with Gavi and Lamine Yamal ruled out, and Fermín López and Raphinha still recovering, the manager finds himself without a single natural attacking midfielder.
Fermín has returned to light training after suffering a left psoas injury but isn’t yet ready to start. Raphinha, recovering from a hamstring strain, could make it back in time for the Girona match, though his fitness remains uncertain.
The Alternatives: Pedri, Ferran, and an Emergency Plan
In this injury crisis, Flick must be creative. Pedri could be deployed as a central creator if his minutes are managed carefully, while Ferran Torres offers a more dynamic and attacking option. If needed, Roony Bardghji could fill the role just behind the striker, bringing energy and unpredictability.
Another unorthodox solution could involve Marcus Rashford playing in a deeper position. Though not his natural role, the Englishman’s speed and power could prove useful in matches where Barcelona rely on quick transitions.
Looking to La Masia: A Bet on Youth
Hansi Flick may also turn to La Masia, Barcelona’s famed academy. Youngsters Dro and Toni Fernández have already made first-team appearances and could be called upon again. Dro debuted as a starter against Real Sociedad, showing promise and confidence, while 17-year-old Toni Fernández is considered one of the most talented prospects in the academy.
