One of the great pillars for Barça Atlètic this season is set to be Guille Fernández. As a first-year youth player, the midfielder emerged as a significant asset for the reserve team last season. Initially under Albert Sánchez and later with Sergi Milà, the young midfielder held his own with impressive maturity at just 16 years of age.
Despite a challenging season marked by relegation, it proved to be a period of immense learning. Guille even snatched Lamine’s record for being the youngest to debut for Barça Atlètic, a feat only attainable by the chosen few.
A midfielder known for his excellent vision on the field and strong physical presence, Guille has shown his capability for scoring, as evidenced by a spectacular goal against Atlètic Lleida recently. Unlike the more traditional La Masia midfielders, who focus on passing and receiving, Guille is more direct in his approach. His goal-scoring ability is apparent from the seven goals he scored in his first ‘professional’ year in the Primera RFEF at just 16 years old.
Still a Second-Year Youth Player
Having just turned 17, Guille, who is still a second-year youth player, is shaping up to be one of the flagship talents under Juliano Belletti at Barça Atlètic. He kicked off the pre-season on July 14 with Flick, earning a spot on the Asian tour. He debuted with the first team in Korea against FC Seoul and continued to train with the main squad upon returning, under the German coach’s guidance.
Only a select few have managed to integrate with the first team in a demanding preparation phase with all available members, differing from the previous year. The competition for spots was fierce, yet Guille remains within the orbit of Heidelberg’s coaching staff. Numerous clubs have shown interest again this summer, with names like Dortmund and Andorra mentioned, among many others.
Last summer, before moving up to the youth stage, the player had several offers to leave Barça, attractive offers with first-team future plans. However, he chose to stay and has a contract until 2027. The calls came once again, but his camp wasn’t inclined to listen. They believe he’s still very young, that Barça is the ideal environment for further growth, and that training with the first team while competing with the reserves is crucial for his development. Naturally, working hard to seize opportunities.
The drop to the Segunda RFEF might have tempted talents like Guille to leave, but he chose to stay with Barça. Having spent eight years with the club, he has developed both as a player and a person (still a work-in-progress) and being a leader in the reserve team serves as a motivation. This is an important year before
reopening talks with the Blaugrana about his future and contracts.
