The Challenge : Winning Without Lamine Yamal

Since Lamine Yamal burst onto the scene with FC Barcelona’s first team, the young star has gained overwhelming influence and responsibility. The Rocafonda-born player has not only secured a spot in the starting eleven in an indisputable manner, but he has also ensured that most of the offensive play revolves around his immense talent. The academy graduate is a constant presence in all of Flick’s tactics, and his absences have been significant setbacks.

At just 18 years old, some are already talking openly about ‘Lamine-dependence’ at Barca. Fortunately, so far, the number of matches Lamine Yamal has missed due to physical or technical issues is limited. His exceptional physique has allowed him to enjoy continuity, crucial in becoming the global star that he is today.

To date, since his promotion, Lamine has missed only eight official matches for various reasons. The results without him are a bit concerning: five wins, one draw, and two losses. While these statistics might seem modest, considering the strength of the opponents and the competitions involved, they can cause some anxiety among the Blaugrana faithful.

Without Lamine, Barca managed to defeat Brest in the last edition of the Champions League, Barbastro in the last two Copa del Rey knockouts, Getafe—where he was on the bench for the full 90 minutes—and Unionistas de Salamanca, also a Copa match. These five victories were decisive, but shouldn’t pose significant challenges for the Barca squad on their own.

The draw was against Celta, in one of those classic encounters against the Vigo team that almost always demands the best version of Barca to secure the three league points in contention. However, in this case, only one point was earned.

The two losses suffered by Barca without Lamine Yamal occurred during the period when the young forward was sidelined due to ankle problems. During his absence, the team lost to Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid.

In summary, considering the eight affected matches, one clear conclusion can be drawn: Barca struggles to win in the league without Lamine Yamal on the roster. It’s an alarming statistic that will be tested once again today with the visit of Valencia.
