On September 24, during the training session before the Oviedo vs. Barça match, Hansi Flick surprised everyone by calling up a young left-footed center-back with a very familiar surname: Baba Kourouma Kourouma. At only 16 years old, Baba is not an unknown figure at La Masia. He is the younger brother of Ilaix Moriba, the talented midfielder who made his debut under Ronald Koeman in 2021 before deciding to leave for RB Leipzig.
That move turned out to be a difficult chapter in Ilaix’s career, but he has since matured through spells at Valencia, Getafe, and now Celta Vigo, where he is under contract until 2029. His experience is now serving as a guide for Baba, who is being carefully advised to make each career decision wisely as he gets closer to the professional level.
A Left-Footed Central Defender Barça Needs
Since the departure of Iñigo Martínez, FC Barcelona has not had a natural left-footed central defender in the first-team squad. Baba perfectly fits that profile. His technical skill in building from the back, both in short and long passes, along with his speed in challenges and anticipation, have made the club take serious notice of him.
It is worth remembering that Pau Cubarsí made his official debut with Barça at just 16 years old, only a few days before his 17th birthday. Baba, who was born in 2009, will turn 17 on March 23, 2026. His age and maturity show that a first-team opportunity might not be too far away.
Already Shining in the Youth Teams
Although his body is still developing at 1.76 meters tall, Baba is already competing above his age group. While he technically belongs to Juvenil B, he plays regularly for Pol Planas’ Juvenil A in both the UEFA Youth League and the División de Honor.
Last weekend, he caught everyone’s attention by scoring a stunning goal in the Catalan derby against Espanyol. His powerful left-footed shot from outside the box flew past the goalkeeper and into the net. The goal highlighted not only his striking ability but also his confidence and composure under pressure.
Versatile, Intelligent, and Determined
Baba is more than just a central defender. He can also perform as a defensive midfielder, showing excellent passing, tactical awareness, and the instinct to join attacks when needed. His character and leadership at such a young age have earned praise from coaches and scouts.
In May, shortly after turning 16, Baba extended his contract with FC Barcelona until 2028, securing his place at the club through the end of his youth development. This renewal shows the high level of confidence that Barça has in his potential.
A Star in the Making
The rise of Baba Kourouma represents the best of La Masia’s tradition. His left-footed talent, intelligence, and calm personality make him one of the most exciting prospects in the academy. If he continues his progression, the young defender could soon follow in his brother’s footsteps and perhaps build an even brighter career in Blaugrana colors.
