Miquel Ángel Nadal divided his 18 seasons in the First Division between Mallorca in two periods: From 1986 to 1991 and from 1999 to 2005. Between these periods, he played for Barca from 1991 to 1999. Therefore, the former defender is a voice more than authorized to analyze the game this Saturday between his two teams in Son Moix. But he’s also capable to analyze Barça’s defensive crisis. Today, MD published an interview with Nadal:

Plague of injuries in Barça.

This international break a bit expensive. Koundé, Araujo, De Jong Memphis… But they are circumstances that Barça must and can face. They have a large and guaranteed squad. Although it is true that they are important injures.

And above Bellerin.

Yes, it’s bad luck.

The most affected are the center backs.

The problem of injuries end up affecting everyone. Whether you’re a defender or not. Those that remain, however, are very reliable: Eric, Christensen and Pique. What you have to think about is making a good recovery because the season is very long.

If Sergi Roberto does not recover in time, a right back will also be missing.

Some of the centrals will be able to play there.

Or playing with three defenders.

Everything will depend on the system that Xavi chooses. Barça already played like this and they know how to do it. The essential thing is to weather the situation. The League is very long and we have to recover the injured players as soon as possible.

What do you think about the signings of Koundé and Christensen?

Koundé is a total success, he is very fast. Christensen is also very reliable. Barça of this year, beyond the defense, has been reinforced very well in all the lines.

As a specialist, how do you see Barça’s five central defenders?

They are five players of a great level.

There have been many changes.

We came from a state of depression. All the news was bad, now a great job has been done. A good squad. Barça has nothing to envy anyone. Against Bayern the team played well and lost. We can face the two games against Inter with guarantees.

The situation with Pique

What happens with Piqué is not only a sporting issue but other circumstances influenced him. But he is still a very reliable player.

He assured that he sees himself as a starter.

The important thing is that you have motivation and ambition. And that is very positive. It is important in a squad to have players like that. He has self-esteem and, furthermore, nobody can argue with Piqué’s legendary career.

Aspiring to win everything?

What marks the success of a season are the titles. This year, there are aspirations to win everything, yes. At the moment we are very excited.

League and Champions?

They are not easy titles. But it is clear that they are the two main objectives. I see Barça with possibilities, knowing that there is one competition with teams that have the same aspiration.

What will it depend on?

It will come out of the brilliance of the players. There is security at the back. A midfield with creativity and speed and in front people that know how to score many goals. There is responsibility, they know how to handle the pressure and they just need a bit of luck.

And with a Xavi that fits.

I don’t know if he has all the tools he wanted but from last year to now, Barça has changed. The appearance of the team is very good and he is a coach with a Barça philosophy. He has known how to make the squad work.

Like Aguirre did at Mallorca.

He is a proven and experienced coach. Aguirre knows the league. He gives me the feeling that he will suffer, he always suffers, but I don’t think it’s agony.

It is a very balanced Mallorca at home and abroad.

The essential thing is that at home they are strong. They need the points, they are the basis of permanence and they know it. However, it will be a very tough match for Mallorca.

What should Barça be attentive to?

Barça must be concerned about being superior, feeling comfortable with the ball and control the rhythm of the game. Have the ball and be vigilant. But, beware, Mallorca also has their weapons.

Which?

Think, act and execute very fast. Football has these things, it balances.

  • There is a dilemma at Barcelona regarding Ansu Fati.

• Some at the club are in favour of his sale since he is not an important player for Xavi currently and his sale would largely help the finances. Moreover, his salary is on the medium to high range.

• Some are in favour of a loan, which will allow him to gain confidence with more minutes or to revalue himself for a hypothetical sale next year.

• Xavi is confident in his quality and considers that he can grow more but the reality is that, he is prioritizing Raphinha and also Ferran Torres as substitutes for Dembélé despite Fati
