Marcus Rashford delivered a dazzling performance as FC Barcelona began their UEFA Champions League 25/26 campaign with a vital 2-1 victory away at Newcastle United.
At the electric St. James’ Park, Rashford scored two stunning goals in the second half to silence the home crowd and secure three massive points for Hansi Flick’s men. After last season’s disappointing European start, Barça showed character, maturity, and clinical finishing.
Flick’s Bold Line-Up for a Tough Test
Flick made several notable changes to his lineup, bringing back key names:
- Ronald Araujo returned as captain, offering strength against Newcastle’s physical front line.
- Frenkie de Jong was also back after missing the weekend clash with Valencia.
- Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski both started again as expected.
The home side, led by Eddie Howe, pressed high and played aggressively, but Barça gradually settled into the match and found control through De Jong and Pedri in midfield.
First Half: Joan García Stands Tall
Newcastle created several dangerous moments early, especially through Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes down the flanks.
- Barça’s left side struggled, with Gerard Martín and Jules Koundé both facing intense pressure.
- Joan García was brilliant, claiming crosses and producing a world-class save in the 24th minute from a Barnes shot after a rapid Newcastle counter.
Barça’s attack gradually grew into the game, with Rashford and Raphinha dangerous out wide while Lewandowski pulled defenders away.
Still, it was a tense, physical half — yellow cards were shown to Gerard Martín, Dan Burn, and Joelinton — and the sides went to the break locked at 0-0.
Second Half: Rashford Changes Everything
Both teams came out unchanged, but the game shifted dramatically when Rashford exploded into life.
- 58’ Goal — Rashford: Koundé delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, and Rashford rose high to head home brilliantly for 1-0.
- 67’ Goal — Rashford: Just nine minutes later, the Englishman struck again, this time unleashing a ferocious long-range shot that crashed in off the crossbar.
Newcastle tried to respond, with Howe bringing on Nick Woltemade, Jacob Murphy, Malick Thiaw, and Joe Willock, but Barça’s structure held firm.
Late Drama: Gordon Pulls One Back
Flick introduced fresh legs — Ferran Torres, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, Dani Olmo, and Marc Casadó — to preserve the lead.
In stoppage time, Anthony Gordon finished a low cross from Murphy to make it 1-2, but Barça stayed composed through seven minutes of added time to secure the win.
What This Win Means for Barça
This victory is more than just three points — it’s a statement.
- Barça showed they can win away in one of Europe’s toughest stadiums.
- Rashford proved he can be a difference-maker on the biggest stage.
- The defense, led by Araujo and protected by Joan García, showed resilience under pressure.
With Paris Saint-Germain visiting Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on October 1 for Matchday 2, Barça now sit in a strong position in their Champions League group.
