To begin 2026, we have quite possibly one of the most anticipated games of our season so far. Not really in terms of opponent, but in terms of the atmosphere and hostility. It’s a new year and Barça are finally back in action after the winter break. And it’s derby day for us this evening, as we travel to our neighbouring Catalan team to face Espanyol. Live from 9pm local time, it’s the Catalan derby between Barcelona and Espanyol. Let’s jump straight into the preview!
A Quick Look at our opponent:
In terms of our opponent for tonight’s game, it’s tricky to call them “rivals” because they aren’t competing for the same things we are. However, games away to Espanyol are always hostile. And over the last few years, we’ve managed to tie up the league title on their own home patch. Which of course has only added to the tensions between the two teams. It’s quite easy to say, there’s not much affection between Barça and Espanyol. Especially within the fanbases. And tonight is expected to be an extremely hostile environment. And that’s down to one man. Joan Garcia. We managed to pull off an incredible deal during the summer window, poaching him from Espanyol and making him our number 1 keeper. This is the first time he’ll be returning to his former club, and although no doubt, he’ll treat the Espanyol fans with respect, I highly doubt he’ll get the same reception in return.
Espanyol have had a very good start to the season, sitting in 5th place in La Liga. Which, for them, is a remarkable achievement considering they’ve been fighting relegation for the last few years, only being recently promoted a few seasons back too. And when we look at the general stats for them in La Liga, although they have conceded 3 fewer than Barça this season, it is us who trump them in the goal scoring department, scoring almost 3x the amount they have. It’s a tricky game to start off the new year, that’s for sure.
Predicted lineup:
When it comes to our predicted lineup for the game, we are lucky in the sense that we are pretty much at full strength. Pedri and Olmo have both returned, with Araujo also coming back from his brief break away from the team. Gavi is the only player still out, but he will hopefully be back in the next month or so. There are no suspensions either, so for the first time all season, Flick pretty much has the entire squad to choose from. Me personally, I would love to see a similar thing to what we saw against Real Betis with Yamal at the number 10 position, Roony on the right and Raphinha on the left with either Ferran, Lewandowski or Rashford down the middle. But I think Flick will decide to go with something more familiar.
My starting 11:
Joan Garcia
Kounde- Cubarsi- Martin- Balde
Pedri- Eric
Yamal- Fermin- Raphinha
Ferran
