Many fans don’t know this — but Marcus Thuram has strong ties to FC Barcelona.
Back in 2006, when his father Lilian Thuram signed for Barça, young Marcus joined the club’s official football school, FCB Escola (now Barça Academy). He trained there for nearly two years, sharing pitches with future stars and idolizing Ronaldinho, Henry, and Messi from up close.
Coaches at the time saw his passion. He wasn’t just there because of his father — he genuinely loved the game and lived the Barça culture from the inside.
2023: The Summer Barça Almost Signed Him
Fast forward to 2023. Thuram’s contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach expired, and he became one of the hottest free agents on the market. Barça were seriously interested. With Lewandowski aging, Marcus seemed like the perfect mix of experience and potential.
His ability to play as a striker or on the wing could make him a flexible option in Hansi Flick’s system. But of course, Hansi Flick was not there at that time.
Why It Didn’t Happen
But football isn’t always romantic. In the end, Barça couldn’t seal the deal. Here’s why:
- Financial Limitations: The club’s tight salary cap and limited funds meant they couldn’t offer a competitive signing bonus.
- Transfer Priorities: Barça chose to invest in younger talents like Vitor Roque for long-term growth.
- Inter’s Offer Was Better: Inter Milan made a strong push — and their financial package was too good for Thuram to refuse.
So instead of returning to Barcelona, Marcus signed for Inter in July 2023. And he didn’t take long to make headlines.
The Goal That Hurt
In the Champions League semi-final first leg against Barça, Marcus Thuram did the unthinkable — he scored just 30 seconds into the match.
A perfect strike. Against the club where his journey began.
It was the fastest goal ever scored in a Champions League semi-final — and it left a bitter taste for culers watching at home.
The Connection Lives On
Even though he wears black and blue now, Marcus Thuram’s story still has Blaugrana roots. He trained at La Masia, lived the Barça way as a kid, and was almost one of us again.
Sometimes football gives us fairytales. Other times, it gives us the plot twist.
Visca el Barça.
Let’s just hope the next time a La Masia kid leaves… they don’t come back to score against us.
