Robert Lewandowski is steadily making history. The Polish forward has reached 150 matches with Barça, achieving a remarkable number of goals for this milestone: 103 goals while donning the Blaugrana jersey, with 19 assists and five titles since joining FC Barcelona in the 2022-23 season.
This achievement solidifies him as the team’s offensive lynchpin, with no doubts or weaknesses. His career underscores this. He netted the same number of goals with Borussia Dortmund, but needed 37 additional matches to do so, with an average of 0.55 goals per game. At Bayern Munich, his scoring record soared to the highest level: 344 goals in 375 matches (0.92 per game). Now, with the Blaugrana, his average stands at 0.69 goals per game.
At 37, Lewandowski’s goal-scoring prowess remains undiminished. Last season, he tallied 42 goals in 52 matches under Hansi Flick, proving his status as a true ‘killer’. Although he had yet to find the net for Barça this season—having scored for Poland during the league break—he started the match against Valencia as a substitute, only to enter in the second half and score a brace. His first goal came in the 76th minute after receiving a pass from Olmo inside the box, evading two defenders and striking a right-footed shot into the top corner. The Barca ‘9’ netted his second in the 85th minute, receiving an assist from Bernal within the area and skillfully beating the Valencia keeper. Maximum efficiency from Lewy.
With 150 games under his belt and an exciting season ahead, Lewandowski aims to continue expanding his successful story with Barça. This season, he has yet to start a match. In Mallorca, he missed out due to a left thigh biceps injury, played 14 minutes against Levante, 12 against Rayo, and 22 minutes versus Valencia at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
Hansi Flick now faces the decision of who will be Barça’s frontman in their European debut against Newcastle this Thursday. So far, the German coach has opted for Ferran Torres as the offensive focal point in the starting lineup, with the ‘Shark’ responding with two goals and an assist. When asked about this issue, Flick stated, “We have a fantastic team and there will be games for everyone. The group has been brilliant in all positions. The three points are perfect, and for me, it’s great to choose between Ferran and Lewandowski. I’m very happy to have such quality players in this position. It’s all about the team.”
This Thursday at St James’ Park, the Barça coach must decide whether to leave Lewandowski on the bench again and bring him on in the second half or to bank on his experience and effectiveness in this crucial European debut.
