The most crucial objective this preseason for Òscar Gistau was regaining confidence and finding his form after being sidelined for several months. The forward faced a significant setback when he underwent surgery for a hamstring tendon injury in Finland last December. This unfortunate event meant bidding farewell to a promising season, missing out on the UEFA Youth League, the final stretch of the Copa del Rey, La Liga, and the Champions Cup. There was also the missed opportunity to gather minutes with Barça Atlètic.
The young star from Tarragona kicked off the season in top form, netting three goals in two matches in the Youth League, also showcasing skill with Juvenil A in the División de Honor and with the Spain Under-17 national team. But the focus was on working behind the scenes to come back stronger while minimizing future risk of re-injury.
ALWAYS IN THE STARTING LINEUP
This summer, Gistau reported for duty under the guidance of Juliano Haus Belletti. The Brazilian coach knows him inside out. This familiarity naturally eases the process. The striker has been one of the few constants in the Barça Atlètic lineup, starting all preseason games. He is theoretically contending for the ‘number 9’ spot against Víctor Barberá, who is still grappling with fitness issues.
Gistau, in action during the match against L’Escala / Dani Barbeito
Gistau debuted at Maracanã in the Under-20 Intercontinental. He spent 80 minutes on the pitch, showcasing impressive play against Flamengo’s defense. He held his own against opponents two and three years senior, and more physically developed. Gradually, he’s been reclaiming his competitive edge and getting comfortable on the field after such a long hiatus. He’s ready for the action to commence this coming weekend with the first matchday of Segunda RFEF against Porreres.
HEADING TOWARDS A STARTING ROLE
In the last test against L’Hospitalet before the official season kicks off, we witnessed the best version of Gistau, indicating he’s set to start this Sunday. Belletti has faith in him, aiming for him to quickly regain his perfect form and match rhythm. Òscar isn’t your typical ‘number 9’; he’s a versatile forward capable of linking play, exploiting spaces, and holding up the ball. He’s also a reliable finisher.
