FC Barcelona secured a valuable 1–1 draw against Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. However, one of the most surprising protagonists of the night was young academy player Xavi Espart.
The 18-year-old full-back made his debut for the first team in one of the most demanding environments possible and left a very positive impression on both the coaching staff and the dressing room.
His performance was so convincing that some teammates even started comparing him to a legendary European defender.
A debut at the toughest possible moment
Espart entered the pitch during the final minutes of the match after physical problems for Ronald Araújo, precisely when Newcastle were pushing hard in search of a winning goal.
It was the most delicate moment of the game, with Barcelona defending the draw in a stadium fully behind the home side.
Despite the pressure of the situation, the young defender showed remarkable personality. He was involved in several important defensive actions and even dared to move forward to support attacking plays.
His composure on the ball and his reading of the game surprised many inside the team.
Comparisons with Philipp Lahm
After the match, several Barcelona players congratulated the young full-back publicly on social media.
Marc Bernal was among the first to praise him, even comparing him to Philipp Lahm, the legendary former Bayern Munich defender.
Interestingly, Hansi Flick had already made a similar comparison in the past, suggesting that Espart’s playing style reminded him of the historic German full-back.
Other teammates such as Fermín López, Diego Kochen and former Barça striker Marc Guiu also congratulated the youngster after the game.
One of La Masia’s most exciting prospects
Espart is currently considered one of the academy players generating the most excitement within La Masia.
An international with Spain U19 national team, the full-back has been gaining importance in the club’s youth structure and is now viewed as one of the most promising talents emerging from the academy.
His Champions League debut confirms the confidence Flick has placed in him.
Espart’s message after the match
After the game, the young defender also shared his emotions on social media.
He said he was extremely happy to fulfill his dream of debuting for the club of his life and doing so in a competition like the Champions League.
Espart also thanked his family, friends and everyone who supported him throughout his development.
For the young academy player, this debut could be just the beginning of a much longer journey with Barcelona’s first team.
