Alessandro Bastoni is once again right in the middle of FC Barcelona’s transfer thinking. Posts summarising Fabrizio Romano’s latest update say the Inter defender is among Barça’s top targets to strengthen the heart of the defence, although he is not the only name under consideration. Those same summaries add that the club are working with three or four centre-back options, which suggests Deco is treating the position as a major priority ahead of next season.
That idea fits perfectly with the roadmap Barcelona have been shaping for months. The club want to raise the defensive level with a centre-back who brings authority, experience and clean build-up play, while still operating within the financial restrictions that continue to shape every move. In purely footballing terms, Bastoni fits that profile extremely well because of his age, his quality on the ball and his ability to lead a back line.
However, the message coming from Inter’s side is just as clear. The same Romano-attributed summaries say Bastoni is viewed by Inter as a crucial part of the project, not as a routine asset they would casually place on the market. That means the link with Barça may be real, but the operation is still far from simple and would depend heavily on the budget Barcelona can actually assign to that position.
In other words, Barcelona may admire him greatly, but Inter have no intention of opening the door at a discounted price. The Italian club’s stance appears to be that, if Bastoni is ever sold, it would have to happen under exceptional circumstances. That is the major barrier currently separating genuine interest from an advanced negotiation.
Inter want Bastoni to become a record-level sale
The most striking part of the information is the financial expectation around any possible departure. The Romano-attributed update says Inter do not expect a Bastoni deal on the exact same level as Romelu Lukaku’s move to Chelsea, but they do want Bastoni to become a record-type sale among defenders.
The Lukaku reference helps explain the scale of that thinking. Reuters reported in August 2021 that Chelsea brought Lukaku back from Inter in a club-record deal worth a reported £97.5 million, with other coverage at the time placing the transfer at around €115 million.
That precedent explains why Inter are so protective of Bastoni’s value. The goal would not necessarily be to match the Lukaku number, but to set the bar at an extraordinarily high level for a defender. In practical terms, Inter would not be entertaining a normal sale, but rather a deal with historic weight for that position.
For Barcelona, that changes everything. If Deco decides to push seriously for Bastoni, admiration alone will not be enough. The club would likely need prior sales, wage-margin room and a very clear strategic decision to prioritise centre-back above other summer needs. That is the factor that currently defines the gap between desire and reality.
Bastoni is highly valued, but he is not alone on the shortlist
Another important detail is that Barça are not relying on this one name alone. The Romano-attributed reporting makes it clear that Bastoni is very high on the list, but he is not the only alternative being studied by the sporting department.
That matters because it shows Barcelona are working with several open scenarios rather than allowing themselves to become trapped in one extremely expensive operation. It also fits the broader situation at the club, where multiple areas need reinforcement and every major decision must be measured against the overall financial plan.
So the picture is fairly clear for now. Alessandro Bastoni is a real Barça target, he is one of Deco’s most appreciated defensive options and he fits the club’s footballing idea. But Inter would only consider a sale at an exceptional price, and that threatens to turn a desirable move into one of the most difficult operations of the summer.
