Bernardo Silva’s name has returned to Barça’s orbit in recent weeks, but the club’s response is now much more definitive than in the past. Recent reporting says the Portuguese midfielder still wants the move and that his agent, Jorge Mendes, has been trying to convince the Barça hierarchy to take the opportunity seriously. However, the clearest line coming out of the club is that Barcelona do not currently see him as a priority signing.
Inside Barça, the feeling is simple: that chance has already passed. In other words, what once looked like a dream move now no longer fits the club’s actual sporting and financial roadmap. Reports from the last few days say Barça’s main priorities are elsewhere, especially in attack and central defence, and that Bernardo no longer matches the current shortlist in the same way he would have in previous summers.
A desire that no longer fits the plan
For years, Bernardo Silva was one of Barça’s favourite names. His quality, versatility and technical profile made him look like a natural fit for the club’s style. But the current context is very different.
The squad has changed, the priorities have changed, and the positions Bernardo would occupy are now seen as less urgent than other areas. Recent reporting also points to doubts inside the club because he will turn 32 in August, while Barça already have strong options in several of the zones where he usually operates.
That is why the operation has cooled so much. It is not really about whether Bernardo is still a very good player. It is about whether he is the right move for Barça right now, and the answer from the club seems increasingly close to no.
Not even as a free agent
What makes the situation even more striking is that Barça do not appear convinced even if Bernardo were available on a free transfer. His current contract with Manchester City expires at the end of the 2025/26 season, which in theory would make him a very attractive market opportunity.
But Barça are looking at more than just the transfer fee. Salary, squad balance and financial flexibility still matter enormously. Even without paying for the transfer itself, the club do not seem eager to reshape their structure for a player who is no longer seen as essential to the project.
A closed chapter from Barça’s side
So the picture is now much clearer. Bernardo Silva still wants Barça, Jorge Mendes is trying to make the move happen, but the club have effectively moved on. There is no sign that Barça are preparing to turn this into one of their major summer operations.
That is why the surprise is so strong. What used to be one of the club’s most attractive market ideas now looks like a closed chapter from Barcelona’s side. Bernardo may still be open to the move, but Barça no longer appear ready to meet him halfway.
