FC Barcelona continues planning for next season while still competing for current titles. One of the sporting department’s clear priorities is to strengthen the centre of defence. Names like Alessandro Bastoni, Micky van de Ven, Marcos Senesi and Nathan Aké have all appeared on the club’s shortlist.
However, in recent days another candidate with a different profile has gained attention: Luka Vušković.
The 19-year-old Croatian centre-back belongs to Tottenham Hotspur but is currently playing on loan at Hamburger SV. His performances in 2. Bundesliga have attracted the attention of several major European clubs, including Barcelona.
A centre-back with dominant physical presence
Vušković stands 1.93 meters tall and is known for his physical strength, aerial dominance and solidity in defensive duels. Despite his size, he also shows impressive coordination that allows him to anticipate attackers and defend effectively even in open spaces.
One of the qualities scouts value most is his defensive maturity despite being only 19 years old. He shows good judgement when deciding whether to step forward, delay an attack or wait for defensive support.
He is also extremely dangerous in set-piece situations. This season he has scored five goals in 22 matches, an impressive number for a defender.
Able to play on the left side as well
Although naturally right-footed, Vušković can also adapt to the left side of central defence thanks to his comfortable use of his left foot. This versatility provides tactical flexibility, something Barcelona values when building its defensive line.
However, when playing on that side he still has room for improvement. In some situations he holds the ball a little too long before releasing it, which can slow down the build-up play.
A difficult signing
Tottenham paid around €11 million to HNK Hajduk Split to sign the player and see him as one of the defenders of the club’s future.
For that reason, a transfer would not be easy. Current estimates suggest that a potential deal could exceed €40 million, a significant amount for such a young player.
The Pini Zahavi factor
Another element that could influence the operation is Pini Zahavi, the player’s agent.
Zahavi maintains a strong relationship with Barcelona and represents several important figures at the club, including Robert Lewandowski and coach Hansi Flick.
That connection could potentially facilitate conversations if Barcelona decides to move forward.
Positive reports from Germany
Journalists who closely follow Hamburger SV highlight above all the defender’s mentality.
Reports from Germany suggest that while Vušković is not exceptionally fast, he is extremely strong and possesses remarkable maturity for a 19-year-old player. Many believe he has the qualities to build a major career in European football.
Inside Barcelona, there is a belief that his profile could fit well within Flick’s tactical system. However, any move will depend on the club’s priorities in the transfer market and the financial possibilities for strengthening the defence.
