Bernardo Silva’s name is back around Barcelona once again, but the context now looks very different from previous summers. The Portuguese midfielder still appears to be highly attracted by the idea of playing at Camp Nou, and recent reporting says his agent, Jorge Mendes, is already trying to push the move forward by speaking with people around the club. Several reports published in the last few days say Mendes is working to convince both Deco and Hansi Flick that Silva could be a market opportunity if he leaves Manchester City when his contract expires in June 2026.
That is the part that gives life to the story. Silva has been linked with Barça for years, and his admiration for the club has been part of the conversation for a long time. Now, with his contract situation making a summer exit more realistic, the possibility has resurfaced again. Reports in Spain say he is ready to make an economic effort in order to finally wear blaugrana, which would make him a much more accessible target than in other transfer windows.
The player wants it, but Barça are not convinced
Even so, the most important part of the story is not the player’s desire, but Barcelona’s reaction. Right now, Barça do not appear to see Bernardo Silva as a priority signing. Recent reporting says the club’s main summer focus is still on other areas of the squad, especially in attack and central defence, which leaves the Portuguese playmaker outside the first line of urgent targets.
That is why the operation remains cold inside the offices. Silva may like the idea, Mendes may be pushing, and the possibility of signing him without a transfer fee may look attractive on paper, but Barça are still dealing with financial restrictions and squad-balance questions. His salary, his age, and the fact that the team already have strong options in similar positions all reduce the urgency of the move. Reports specifically mention doubts because Silva will turn 32 in August and because Barça are already well covered in the areas where he usually plays.
Not even a free transfer makes it easy
What makes the case especially striking is that Barcelona do not seem fully convinced even if he arrives as a free agent. Under normal circumstances, a player of Bernardo’s quality becoming available without a transfer fee would be seen as a major opportunity. But Barça’s current planning is being shaped much more by structure than by name value alone.
So the message right now is quite clear. Bernardo Silva wants Barça, Jorge Mendes is trying to make it happen, but the club are not treating the move as a priority. The door is not completely closed, but it is not really open either. And that difference is exactly why the operation remains stuck in a cold, uncertain middle ground.
