Marc-André ter Stegen is facing one of his most delicate summers at FC Barcelona. The German goalkeeper no longer has the undisputed role he held for so many years. His salary has also become a major problem for Barça’s sporting planning.
The club need to reduce wages, create space and finally organise an overloaded goalkeeping department. The sporting situation has also changed, with Joan García seen as present and future. In that context, Barça understand this summer could mark the end of an era.
Barça no longer see Ter Stegen as untouchable
For many years, Ter Stegen was an absolutely protected figure inside the Barça dressing room. His performances saved the team on difficult nights and made him a clear reference. However, injuries and a lack of continuity have completely changed his sporting scenario.
The German must return to Barça after a season surrounded by physical doubts. His time away did not fully restore the prominence he was looking for. Now he returns to a club already designing its future without him.
Barça’s goalkeeping area has too many names and very little financial margin. The club do not want that position becoming a permanent conflict this summer. That is why Deco wants a quick, useful and financially logical solution.
Ajax appear as a logical exit
Ajax have emerged as an interesting route for the German goalkeeper’s future. The Dutch club are in a rebuilding phase and need leadership immediately. In that scenario, Ter Stegen fits through experience, personality and build-up quality.
The presence of Míchel on the bench also strengthens this market possibility. The Spanish coach knows the goalkeeper well and values his passing ability. Jordi Cruyff also knows Barça’s environment and could help early contacts.
The problem, as almost always in this operation, is the economic side. Ter Stegen’s salary remains far above Ajax’s usual financial parameters. To advance, a major reduction or shared formula would be necessary.
A necessary but painful exit
Barça know saying goodbye to Ter Stegen would not be just another decision. The German has been one of the club’s major symbols for a decade. His history matters, but the current planning no longer allows nostalgia.
Freeing his salary would give Barça more room for other important market files. The sporting department need registrations, reinforcements and a competitive squad for Hansi Flick. That is why every high salary is now analysed with much colder eyes.
There is also a sporting question affecting the goalkeeper himself directly. Ter Stegen needs minutes, importance and rhythm after very complicated months. Staying without a clear role in Barcelona would be uncomfortable for everyone.
The ending will depend on money
The operation with Ajax cannot be considered closed at this stage. The Dutch club can offer project, a familiar coach and an attractive environment. However, the biggest obstacle remains fitting such a high salary into their structure.
Barça could make things easier if the formula really reduces their wage bill. Ter Stegen, meanwhile, must decide whether he accepts a new scenario and lower demands. That choice will be key to unlocking an exit nobody imagined recently.
The summer may be long, but the internal message looks increasingly clear. Barça have the goal covered, need salary space and no longer see him as untouchable. If Ajax find the right formula, Ter Stegen could finally say goodbye to the Camp Nou.
Caution note: At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Barça, Ajax and Marc-André ter Stegen.
