The four footballers accepted a renewal with lower wages, which they would subsequently recover later. According to the previous board of directors, these four renewals represented salary savings of between 16 and 18 million euros; in addition to a saving of 15m for the amortization of each of the contracts.
According to SPORT, this saving that the previous board of directors created meant an extra salary cost of 311 million euros in the long term. A classic ‘Bread for today and hunger for tomorrow’ case. Therefore, Barça wants these contracts to be null and void and return to the conditions they had before signing these renewals.
The club has been dealing with the matter for three months with a law firm, with the aim that Piqué, Lenglet, Ter Stegen and De Jong give the green light to renouncing the increase in wages their last signed contract stipulated. In the same way, if those involved do not come to their senses, FC Barcelona plan to take the case to the Prosecutor’s Office because they see criminal signs, accusing the previous board of directors.
Hopefully, there will be a peaceful solutions with all parties of this situation. Taking this matter to court would not be a good thing for any of the sides. It looks like with Pique there’s already a solution. But a solution isn’t close with Lenglet, Ter Stegen and De Jong. Time will tell if there’s anything there besides big headlines.
