Pedri is the fulcrum of Barça’s midfield and in many ways unreplaceable. But if there is one player in the squad who has similar characteristics to the Tenerife native. It is Pablo Torre. Quality, vision, finishing and the ability to get the ball past opponents.
The arrival of the Cantabrian player was surrounded by great expectation, but his participation in the first team continues to be very scarce.
Xavi Hernandez has always talked about the great competition in midfield, and it is true, but Pedri’s injury and Sergio Busquets not fully recovered yet could open the doors wide open for Pablo Torre.
His 213 minutes in seven games, most of it surprisingly in European competitions, are not enough to make an assessment. Neither are the few games that the player from Soto de La Marina has played with the reserve team.
We are in the middle of February and we still don’t know if Pablo is ‘good enough’ for Barça, at least in terms of competitive matches.
Yet to start a match in La Liga
The visit of Cádiz to the Sportify Camp Nou, four days before the Old Trafford ‘final’, could finally present Pablo Torre’s first start in La Liga. So far in regular competition, he has only played 13 minutes in the 4-0 thrashing of Athletic Bilbao.
He will likely start if Xavi continues to use four midfielders. Players like Kessie and especially Frenkie de Jong have played a lot of games so far and could be dropped. Gavi is more likely to start though given his suspension in the Europa League.
As for his position on the pitch, he can play either on the inside right or on the left, where Xavi deployed him earlier on the tour of the United States.
Whenever he has been on the pitch, he has responded. In Plzen, he even celebrated a goal and in the Cup, in the Rico Pérez against Intercity, he assisted Ronald Araujo. There is still a lot of expectation and excitement to see more of Pablo Torre.
