Oriol Romeu joined FC Barcelona in the summer of 2023 after an impressive year at Girona. His transfer fee was 3.4 million euros, aimed at filling the gap left by Sergio Busquets, while considering the club’s financial challenges. Under coach Xavi, Romeu’s performance fluctuated due to injuries he suffered in the latter part of the season. The arrival of Hansi Flick led to Romeu’s temporary move back to Girona on loan under the guidance of Míchel.
As the season ended, Romeu returned to Spotify Camp Nou but remained out of Flick’s plans. Although he began preseason training, he didn’t participate in the Asian tour. After the team returned from South Korea, Romeu rejoined group training and was even presented during the Joan Gamper Trophy, while his situation remained unresolved. On August 29, he terminated his contract with Barça, allowing Gerard Martín to be registered. Interestingly, his departure was never officially announced by FC Barcelona.
Future Prospects for Romeu at 34
As Romeu turns 34 this September, he remains a free agent, unable to sign with any club before the recent transfer window closed last Monday. Romeu received offers over the summer but failed to reach any agreements, meaning he must now wait for another opportunity. Girona, his previous team, considered bringing him back, as Míchel has always been a fan of his gameplay.
Open Markets and New Horizons
As a free agent, Romeu can sign with any club, and there are countries where the market remains open, including Brazil, Qatar, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. However, having played in the Premier League and Bundesliga, Romeu prefers to stay closer to home.
Career Highlights
Product of Barça’s youth academy, Romeu played 37 matches for FC Barcelona in the 2023-24 season. His career also includes stints at Chelsea, Stuttgart, Southampton, Valencia, and Girona.
