Business as usual for Barca.
Another win would send them 7 points clear of Madrid in La Liga. Madrid being dealt some mounting pressure to keep up in the race. A draw or loss would heavily complicate things though, so let’s see how Barca fared.
First half
At first, the opening 45 minutes started off well.
Ferran Torres scored a beautiful goal to open the scoring and give Barca some familiar vibes of “business as usual.” However, that was short lived. Barca gave up a goal just 3 minutes later to none other than Borja Iglesias.
Despite the goal though, there wasn’t much in the way of worry.
Barca have been in this spot loads of times. They were able to pull out of it a number of times. That’s why when the first half came and went with the game drawn at 1-1, there wasn’t much worry.
But as we saw in the early portions of the second half, maybe there was a reason to worry a little.
Second half
The second half was…well…interesting.
For starters, Barca gave up 2 goals before the 63rd minute, putting them down 1-3. Both goals were due to very poor play from Barca’s backline, a sight we haven’t seen much of in the last few months, especially with the starting partnership of Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez.
During this time, it felt like the game had ran away from Barca. They weren’t fluid in the attack, there were too many mistakes at the back, it just felt like a perfect recipe for an unexpected loss.
But Barca didn’t give up.
Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo were subbed on, making way for one of Barca’s next comebacks of the entire season.
To start it off, Barca got a quick goal to counter Iglesias’s third goal of the match, courtesy of Dani Olmo. Then just a few minutes later, Yamal assisted Raphinha’s first goal of the match.
In just a flash it was 3-3, Barca were right back in it, but they needed a winner to fully complete the job.
That winner didn’t come until extra time, as Barca were awarded a penalty after VAR intervening. Raphinha was the one who took the penalty and he smashed it home, giving Barca a dramatic 4-3 win that needed everyone involved to play their part.
Final word
Barca better thank whatever deity they believe in that they were the more talented team. They needed every ounce of it to make this comeback and even then needed a penalty to secure the full 3 points.
At least the win is in the books, however Robert Lewandowski went off with an injury and looks to be out pending further confirmation. For right now though, it’s time to just enjoy the win and enjoy another good weekend to be a Barca fan.
Barca’s next match will be on Tuesday as they take on Mallorca.
See you all then!
I’ve been a big time Barca fan since I was 14 years old. I love the club, the history, and the tradition that the club has built over its prestigious history. Forca Barca!
