Alejandro Balde could become one of the biggest surprises of Barça’s summer market. According to Raül Salmurri on Tot Costa, FC Barcelona would be willing to listen to offers for the left-back. That does not mean the club want to sell him, but his name no longer seems completely closed.
The situation is striking because Balde has always been viewed as a future cornerstone. Barça officially announced his renewal in 2023 until June 30, 2028. His release clause was also set at €1 billion, reflecting the club’s contractual protection around him.
However, the market could force Barça to study unexpected scenarios this summer. The club need margin to sign, register and balance several important operations. And a very high offer for Balde could open a delicate debate inside the sporting department.
Cucurella changes the reading
The Marc Cucurella file helps explain this possible defensive reorganisation. Barça have reportedly sounded out the Chelsea full-back, who is studying options to leave London. According to The Athletic, as picked up by Barça Blaugranes, Barcelona and Atlético are both monitoring the player.
Cucurella would not arrive simply as Balde’s backup in the squad. His profile allows him to play as a left-back, wing-back and more aggressive defender in different heights. That versatility fits a wider defensive plan for Hansi Flick.
Chelsea would not block his exit if the right offer arrives. Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid are also mentioned among the clubs monitoring the situation. That is why Deco needs to move quickly if he really wants to be well positioned.
Balde has a market, but also huge value
Balde remains one of the young left-backs with the greatest projection in European football. His pace, range and ability to break forward from deep make him decisive in many matches. He is also an academy player, knows the club and still has major room to grow.
The issue lies in his recent inconsistency and the demands of the new project. Flick needs reliable, consistent full-backs ready to compete throughout the entire calendar. If the club believe the position can be improved through a major sale, they will listen.
Even so, selling Balde would be a huge sporting decision and far from simple. Barça would lose a young, homegrown player with a long contract. That is why any exit would only make sense if an offer arrived that was genuinely difficult to reject.
The left-back position enters the debate
The approach for Cucurella does not automatically mean Balde will leave this summer. But it does confirm that Barça are studying every possible scenario at left-back. The sporting department do not want to be left without alternatives if a strong proposal arrives.
Cucurella would bring Premier League experience, defensive intensity and knowledge of Spanish football. Balde represents youth, speed and a strong emotional connection with the blaugrana fanbase. The decision will depend on price, performance, Financial Fair Play and the needs of the rest of the market.
Barça also have many open operations in attack, midfield and defence. That is why every important sale can completely change Deco’s roadmap. If Balde brings in a huge fee, the club could finance other priority moves.
A file that could shake everything
The Balde case is still in an early phase and there is no sale currently advanced. But the simple fact that Barça would listen to offers already turns his future into a sensitive file. Even more so when Cucurella appears as a real alternative and wants to return to LaLiga.
Flick will have a major say in the final decision because he needs a balanced squad. If he sees Balde as a structural piece, the club will have more reasons to resist. If he accepts a reorganisation, Deco could open a very important operation.
Barça’s market is entering a much more unpredictable phase than expected. Balde was seen as a guaranteed continuity, but the club are now listening to alternative scenarios. And that is the twist: Cucurella appears just as Balde stops being untouchable.
Caution note: This article is based on reports from Raül Salmurri, Tot Costa, The Athletic and Barça Blaugranes. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement or confirmed offer accepted by FC Barcelona for Alejandro Balde, and Marc Cucurella remains a Chelsea player.
