Sergi Domínguez could become one of the silent operations of Barça’s summer. The centre-back left FC Barcelona for Dinamo Zagreb during the last transfer window. Now, his strong season in Croatia has already attracted interest from important clubs.
According to Alfredo Pedullà, Tottenham and Lazio are pushing hard to sign him. The Catalan defender has grown a lot since joining the Croatian champions. And Barça are watching the situation closely because of the percentage they still hold.
The key is that the blaugrana club did not completely give up their future economic interest. Barça received an initial fee for his transfer, but kept a percentage on a future move. That means if Dinamo sell him now, Barcelona could receive an unexpected income.
Tottenham and Lazio enter the scene
Lazio’s interest has not appeared out of nowhere, because the Italian club have been following the centre-back for weeks. They are looking to strengthen their defence with a young, physical profile with room to grow. Domínguez fits because of his age, ball-playing ability and quick adaptation to European football.
Tottenham have also emerged strongly and could completely change the race. The Premier League offers more money, greater visibility and a very attractive competitive project. The English club could also present a stronger proposal than Lazio.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the English option could reach €10 million. That figure would force Dinamo Zagreb to seriously consider an important sale. For Barça, such a move would bring a very interesting indirect profit.
Barça retain a percentage
Barça sold Sergi Domínguez to Dinamo for a fee close to €1.2 million. They also kept 20% of the profit from a future sale. That detail turns every offer for the centre-back into relevant news for Deco.
If Tottenham were to reach €10 million, Dinamo’s initial purchase price would first need to be deducted. Barça would then receive around €1.7 million from the profit share. Added to the initial transfer fee, the total operation would be close to €3 million for the club.
That would not completely change Barça’s market, but it would help. In a summer marked by Financial Fair Play, every income matters a lot in the planning. Even more so when it comes from a player who was no longer part of the first-team dynamic.
An academy player increasing his value
Domínguez left Barça looking for minutes, growth and a context where he could establish himself. At Dinamo, he found a real opportunity to compete more regularly. That continuity has allowed him to gain value in a market closely watching young centre-backs.
The defender had already shown good signs in La Masia and Barça Atlètic. He also had some involvement with the first team before leaving. However, competition at Barça made it very difficult for him to find immediate space.
His evolution shows that some exits can be positive for every party. The player grows, the buying club benefits and Barça keep an economic route open. That formula fits a strategy increasingly common among major clubs.
A sale could arrive soon
Dinamo Zagreb have no absolute need to sell, but a strong offer could change everything. Tottenham and Lazio play in stronger leagues and could be very attractive to the player. The sporting leap would also be clear for a centre-back still developing.
For Barça, the operation will be followed from a distance, but with real economic interest. The club have no direct power over the decision, although they do have the right to earn money if a transfer happens. That is why every movement around Domínguez could end up affecting Barça’s accounts.
The outcome will depend on the final price and the pressure applied by the interested clubs. Lazio look like a serious option, but Tottenham could break the race open with Premier League money. And that is the twist: Barça no longer count on Sergi, but they could still earn money from him.
Caution note: This situation is based on reports from Alfredo Pedullà, Mundo Deportivo and current market information. At the time of writing, there is no official agreement between Dinamo Zagreb, Tottenham, Lazio or Sergi Domínguez.
