The door may be opening again for Joao Cancelo and Barcelona. According to Roger Torelló of Mundo Deportivo, the Portuguese full-back could return to Europe this winter after deciding to leave Al Hilal. Despite having a contract in Saudi Arabia until 2027, the 31-year-old is eager to play again in a top European league, and the Camp Nou remains one of his preferred destinations.
Cancelo’s Desire to Return to Europe
Cancelo’s experience in Saudi Arabia appears to be drawing to a close. After joining Al Hilal a year and a half ago, he is now ready to return to European football. Multiple reports, including those by Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto, indicate that the player and his entourage have already informed Al Hilal of his wish to leave in January.
Barcelona have reportedly made contact in recent days to understand Cancelo’s contractual situation and explore whether a short-term deal could be structured within their financial limits. The interest is cautious but real. Hansi Flick’s squad needs depth in defense after the injury to Andreas Christensen, who will be sidelined for around four months due to a partial ligament tear in his knee.
That situation allows Barcelona to access part of Christensen’s salary margin to register a new player during the winter window. The sporting department sees Cancelo as a realistic option who could add experience and tactical flexibility at a relatively low cost.
A Familiar Name and a Natural Fit
Cancelo’s case is unique. He already knows the club, the city, and the demands of the Barcelona system. During his loan spell from Manchester City in the 2023–24 season, he left a strong impression both on and off the pitch. His adaptability, technical quality, and commitment made him one of the most reliable members of the squad.
More importantly, Cancelo has never hidden his affection for Barcelona. After his departure last summer, he publicly expressed his love for the club, saying, “I am a fan of Barça. I love the club and I love the city.” Those feelings could now serve as the emotional foundation for a second spell, should the club find a feasible financial path.
Why Barcelona Are Considering the Move
From a strategic point of view, Cancelo offers two key advantages. First, he is a versatile full-back who can operate comfortably on either side of the defense. Flick’s tactical setup has often required flexibility, and having a player capable of covering both flanks would relieve pressure on Alejandro Balde and Jules Koundé.
Second, Cancelo already understands Barcelona’s positional principles, which means minimal adaptation time. For a team that cannot afford slow integrations in mid-season, his profile fits perfectly with Flick’s demand for immediate impact.
According to Roger Torelló of Mundo Deportivo, the coaching staff and sporting directors appreciate Cancelo’s professionalism and attitude during his first spell. They view him as a player who not only embraces the club’s culture but also brings leadership and intensity in training sessions.
Competition and Market Context
Barcelona are not alone in their interest. Both Inter Milan and Juventus are monitoring Cancelo’s situation closely. The defender previously played in Italy and maintains a positive reputation there, which could complicate Barça’s pursuit if financial constraints limit their ability to match other offers.
Even so, Barcelona are exploring a formula similar to what internal sources describe as the “Rashford approach”: a short-term, high-quality loan designed to solve an urgent need without committing to a large transfer fee. It would be a practical response to a temporary crisis rather than an extravagant investment.
Looking Ahead
Much will depend on how the market evolves in the coming weeks and how Barcelona assess Ronald Araújo’s physical and mental recovery after his recent personal leave. If the Uruguayan defender returns fully fit, the urgency could decrease slightly. But with Christensen’s absence confirmed, the need for additional defensive support remains.
In that context, Cancelo’s potential return stands out as both logical and emotional. Logical because of his fit in Flick’s tactical system, and emotional because of his lasting affection for the club that reignited his joy for football.
