Marc Guiu decided to leave FC Barcelona last summer. He transferred to Chelsea for six million euros after making his debut with the first team under Xavi’s leadership. His debut was a dream come true against Athletic, scoring the winning goal on his first touch. He played six more matches and even scored in the Champions League, but sought a change of scenery following a call from ‘blue’ coach Enzo Maresca.
“I don’t regret leaving Barça. I left because I thought it was best for my career and now it’s time to enjoy the Premier League. It was a tough decision; Barça had given me everything; it was my home. There were many forwards and no guarantee of a spot in the first team, so I believe I chose the best option. Maresca called and told me he believed in me and the sports project was incredible,” he explained in an interview on ‘Tu Diràs’ on RAC-1 about his decision.
Guiu, 19, played 16 matches last season. He won the Conference League, scoring six goals in the competition, and the Club World Cup, experiencing a strange summer with a loan and return to Chelsea. “This summer we talked with Chelsea because I wanted playing time. I arrived at Sunderland with great enthusiasm; the fans were incredible, some of the best I’ve ever seen. I was very comfortable, but after Liam Delap’s injury, they asked me to return. I’m a Chelsea player and that’s where I’m headed,” explained the Catalan forward, who mentioned he did not speak with Hansi Flick before making his decision: “I didn’t get to talk to Flick; he sent me some messages when we were playing the playoff. I don’t know what would’ve happened if Xavi had stayed, but since it didn’t happen, I don’t want to think about it.”
The Sant Celoni native will have a special match this season in the Champions League, as his team will face Barça. “It will be a special match, the game of my life. Hopefully, I can get some minutes. The key to Chelsea is unity and the coach’s work. He works very well tactically; the training sessions are intense. He surely has influence from Guardiola; the training is very similar to Barça’s, with lots of ball handling and positional play. I’ve already told Cuba I’ll be tough, although I wouldn’t celebrate a goal,” said the Catalan, who is clear that Chelsea is the favorite: “Chelsea is the best team in the world right now. It has an incredible squad, player by player. Maresca is very good, and when we step onto the field, we know what to do. The opponent has nothing to do.”
The Stamford Bridge team, in fact, won the Club World Cup by defeating PSG in the final. Guiu recalls the celebration with Donald Trump: “The most random thing I’ve experienced was the Club World Cup celebration. Trump stayed there with us and didn’t want to leave. Cucu shrugged when he was in front of him in case someone shot from somewhere,” he ends with a laugh.
