FC Barcelona have shifted their attacking and creative priorities ahead of the next transfer window. According to La SER, the blaugrana club now prioritise Bernardo Silva ahead of Marcus Rashford. The Portuguese midfielder’s operation is gaining strength because he could arrive for free after leaving Manchester City.
The movement represents an important twist in Deco and Hansi Flick’s planning. Rashford had left positive impressions during his loan spell, but his continuity no longer looks so clear. Bernardo’s emergence changes the whole board and forces Barça to make immediate decisions.
The key lies in profile, cost and fit within the new squad. Bernardo offers experience, talent, composure and the ability to play in several attacking positions. Rashford, meanwhile, would be further conditioned after the signing of Anthony Gordon for the left wing.
Bernardo gains ground at Barça
According to La SER, sources close to the player see Barça as the best-placed club. Bernardo himself would have prioritised the blaugrana option above other proposals. That desire carries weight, especially in an operation where there would be no transfer fee involved.
The Portuguese star is out of contract with Manchester City this summer, unless there is an unexpected change. The English club announced in 2023 that his renewal only tied him down until 2026. That is why his free-agent status turns the operation into a very attractive opportunity for Barcelona.
Even without paying a transfer fee, the deal would not be completely cheap for Barça. The club would still need to fit his salary, possible signing bonus and Financial Fair Play impact. Even so, they believe the overall cost could be more manageable than other alternatives.
Rashford is left in a difficult position
Marcus Rashford’s situation has changed a lot in recent weeks. The Englishman arrived on loan from Manchester United until June 30, 2026. The official agreement included a purchase option, but Barça still have to decide whether to activate it.
Anthony Gordon’s arrival reduces Rashford’s sporting space even further. Barça have already made a major bet on an attacker who can play from the left. On top of that, the club are still looking for a centre-forward, with Julián Álvarez and João Pedro on the agenda.
That is why Bernardo now appears as a more useful piece to complete the new project. He does not compete in exactly the same role as Rashford, but he would take up important salary space. If Barça must choose, La SER suggests the Portuguese player currently fits better.
Flick must decide the fit
The big question is how Flick would integrate Bernardo into an already crowded midfield. Barça already have Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Fermín López, Marc Casadó and Marc Bernal. Even so, Bernardo offers a different profile through experience, reading of the game and competitive versatility.
He can operate as an interior, attacking midfielder, false winger or control player between the lines. That flexibility fits matches where Barça need to slow the game down, connect passes and protect leads. He would also bring European hierarchy to a squad still very young in several areas.
Flick has already shown that he wants a wider squad ready to compete for everything. Barça’s objective is not only to win LaLiga, but to seriously fight again for the Champions League. In that context, Bernardo can be viewed as an immediate reinforcement for big nights.
A strategic market decision
Barça know they cannot accumulate operations without measuring the total financial impact. Gordon, the future centre-forward and possible renewals already force the club to calculate very precisely. That is why choosing between Bernardo and Rashford could become one of the strategic decisions of the summer.
Rashford offers speed, goals and adaptation to an environment he already knows perfectly. Bernardo, however, represents free-agent talent, winning experience and a historic desire to play in Barcelona. The club must decide which kind of piece they need more to complete the squad.
The final twist is that Barça could let go of a player already tested in their system. But if Bernardo arrives for free and accepts an affordable structure, the opportunity may be too big to ignore. That is why, today, the priority appears to have changed: Bernardo has moved ahead of Rashford at Barça.
